What are Sabermetrics

Sabermetrics was originated and developed to assess a batter or pitcher’s skill using several statistical data. Bill James was credited for being the lead proponent of this method and contributed to its being widely used around the world. Sabermetrics uses on-base, slugging, on-base plus slugging (OPS), and walks plus hits per inning pitched (WHIP) percentages to calculate how a batter performs. On-base percentage measures a batter’s capability of landing on a base.

The Game Plan

Slugging percentage measures a batter’s power to hit the ball with full force, allowing him to cover as many bases he can before the ball ends up in the hands of the opponent. OPS measures a batter’s overall ability, being a combination of the first two percentages. Then WHIP is the one that measures a pitcher’s ability at striking out hitters and preventing them from forwarding to a base.
