The Cy Young Award

The Cy Young Award is likened to the League Most Valuable Player award, but only for pitchers. It is given annually to the best pitcher in their respective leagues. The award was first given in 1956, to honour Cy Young who died the same year and who was one of the best pitchers of that time and a member of the Hall of fame.

The award was initially given only to the single best pitcher in the whole league, but later on was given to one pitcher in each league. The winner is also voted by the Baseball Writers Association of America from a nominee of two players from each team.
