Rookie of the Year

The Rookie of the Year Award is annually given to the best first season player from each league as chosen and voted upon by the Baseball Writers Association of America. It was the Chicago chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) that first established and alone voted for the award in 1940, but in 1947, all members of the national BBWAA participated in the vote. This award sparked several controversies, especially with regard to one’s status as a rookie.

The reason behind the controversy is that some baseball players who won the award were not really “rookies” in the sense that they have already been playing professional baseball in the leagues of their respective countries. However, this controversy has already been settled by the sports officials ruling that professional experience outside the U.S. major leagues does not affect a player’s status as a rookie.
