Pitching and Fielding Moves

As already mentioned, baseball is not just about brute strength, there is also a tactical side to it. Tactical decisions are made throughout the game, especially one involving pitch selections. The four basic types of pitches that can strikeout batters are fastballs, changeups, curveballs, and the sliders. Every pitcher has a speciality pitch that can confuse batters, making them miss the hit. Another pitch strategy is when the pitcher throws the ball to the fielder covering a base in order to check the runner’s lead or effect a tag out. There are several catching strategies, as well.

One involves the fielders concentrated to one side when a batter is known to hit the ball to that side, thus improving the chances of catching the ball. Another involves them moving to the infield in anticipation of a grounder, where the three bases are loaded with runners. These strategies require the coaches of each team to be always on alert of the things happening on the field, so as to help them predict the strategies employed by each other.
